The Gods Peeking Through
by Charlie Obert, November 2020
This is going to be a short post. I’m going to start with a very beautiful quote, and then tell an anecdote of an incident that occurred earlier this fall. Put the two together and they are getting right to the core of something I am trying to get at in the series of essays I am currently working on.
First, the quote. This is from a very interesting book I am currently reading. The book is, Returning to Reality: Christian Platonism for Our Times, by Paul Tyson. (Cascade Books, 2014.) This quote opens the first chapter, titled, Two Views of Reality.
“Emma, my two year old daughter, has quite an astonishing understanding of reality. She is now adept at talking, but she does not just talk to her family and friends, she also talks to the cat, she talks to her breakfast, she talks to the flowers. And as far as she is concerned, her breakfast and the flowers talk back to her.
It seems that she inhabits a cosmos that is intelligibly animate in its own right and where she is in rich communicative fellowship with, well, everything.”
Now for the incident.
This happened to me in late September or early October, around the time Mars and Saturn were in near exact square to each other. Mars was stationing in an exact square to my Moon, far too exact for comfort, so I was concerned to take care of myself physically.
In the week after the Mars station, right around the time I was thinking I’d gotten off scot free, I went to the front door to unlock it and get the mail – and the lock broke. I couldn’t open the door from the inside.
Fortunately I have a side door, so I went and got a replacement door knob and lock, but I was unable to get the old lock out of the door. It was thoroughly broken.
Early the next day I called a locksmith, and when he arrived he told me this problem was very common, and he gets around one of these a week. Twenty minutes and a bit of money later the old lock was out.
Now here’s the odd part – on a whim, I ran charts for the time the door broke, and the time the locksmith showed up.
The door broke right while Saturn was rising, right on the Ascendant real time.
The locksmith showed up right while Mercury was rising, right on the Ascendant real time.
When I noticed that, for just a moment or two I think the world looked to me what it must look like to two year old Emma. With astrology, the world was talking back to me. Saturn broke my door, and Mercury showed up to fix it for me.
The Gods were peeking through and winking at me.
