Fake News, Fake Astrology

Watching the news

Astrology is the art of applying a heavenly pattern to earthly patterns. It is meaningless until you map the symbolic language of astrology onto data of the world.

Your astrology is only as good as the news sources you rely on.

We are in a time of extreme polarization politically, and for several years now I am seeing an increasing trend of more and more astrology online being permeated by a political agenda straight out of the mainstream media. Sometimes this seems to reflect the astrologer’s own political bias, and sometimes it seems to be a matter of echoing media talking points without awareness.

Note that this has nothing to do with technical astrology expertise. I am aware of some very skilled and experienced astrologers who are basically using their astrology language as a projection screen for political rants wrapped up in AstroSpeak.

I don’t want to use specific names here since I don’t want to attack anyone, but I want to give enough information in some examples here that you can check this against your own experience.

My experience has also been that is precisely the astrologers who claim that their own work is above any bias who are the ones that are the most blatantly biased in the predictions – and I have one very experienced astrologer in mind as I say this.

I want to mention a couple of specific examples I have seen in the past year.

One skilled astrologer did a long post in mid 2024, with multiple charts and detailed analysis using complicated minor aspects, that concluded by predicting that if Trump won the presidential election it would be because the election was stolen.

I am writing this in April 2025, and I am not aware of people who are still claiming this election was stolen, whether they like the outcome or not. I also am not aware of any place where this astrologer admitted they got this prediction wrong.

I have since seen a few more essays by this same astrologer. In one essay he used a single planet, Pluto, being near a malefic fixed star, as a lead-in for a rant about the two Evil bullies and Tyrants, Trump and Putin, who will destroy the world. I read a more recent post by him that used multiple charts to expound on the power-hungry fascist Elon Musk.

Here’s another example, that was an online video presentation to a group, also prior to the election, predicting the result. The presenter spent nearly an hour on the chart of Kamala Harris, including going into her personal history. After one of the attendees asked about Trump she pulled up his chart for maybe ten minutes, then switched back to Harris for the rest of the presentation.

The only person she could see was Harris.

Again, this is a person whose astrological expertise I respect – but in this situation the language she used in the presentation was so biased and vague as to be pretty useless.

This next example of media influence on astrology is the most interesting to me and the most nuanced, as it involves someone who does not have a political axe to grind as far as I can tell.

Again, this is a very skilled and experienced astrologer whose work I respect. This person does not reside in America. I saw a mundane post by him about the Aries Ingress this year, and what struck me is that his general predictions, which were couched in the usual somewhat vague and general AstrologySpeak, were just echoing talking points from the mainstream media. I also noticed this post got quite a bit of positive reaction – which makes sense, since most astrologers seem to live in the world of mainstream media, and it’s a self-reinforcing and self-validating community effect.

I went out to his astrology site and looked back through previous posts, to see if I could find a past prediction that I could measure against what actually happened. I found one, dated April 2024 (one year ago as of this writing) making predictions about Russia in 2024 and 2025.

His prediction? That the Russian economy is getting increasingly weak and is in danger of collapsing; that Putin is becoming increasingly unpopular, and that he will fall from power some time in 2024 or 2025, and that this will be a period of weakness and difficulty for Russia.

If you’ve been paying attention, these predictions are exactly the same talking points that Western mainstream media has been repeating about Russia since the war in Ukraine started in 2022. We have heard over and over that Russia is weak, Russia is collapsing, Russia’s economy is in trouble, Russia is losing support, Putin is in trouble, Putin will be removed from office or will die soon – I recall a rumor being floated in the media in early 2023 that Putin has cancer and will die soon.

As recently as last week I viewed a short clip of Zelensky saying that Putin was going to die soon, and when that happens it’s all over. Same media talking point.

My point here is that this astrologer’s predictions about Russia were just the replaying of widely repeated mainstream media talking points. His prediction added nothing new to that.

I bookmarked and printed out that article, and set a reminder to myself to recheck the situation this fall, and again in early 2026, to see how things actually turn out. I may revisit it here on my astrology blog.

Astrology is a symbolic language. By itself it means nothing and everything. It does not really take on concrete meaning and become interpretation until you map it onto an actual subject or situation.

Regardless of how good you are at juggling the language of astrology, if the data situation you map it to is warped or false then your interpretation will come out warped or false.

This applies to all forms of astrology, but I think it is particularly important to be aware of in Mundane astrology, where the data map you are applying astrology to comes from the media you follow.

Again, the point I wish to make here is that your astrology is only as good as your news sources.

This means that a useful practice of astrology today has to include a high level of media awareness, of how the media shapes thinking, and how the purpose of most mainstream news media today is not to inform but to influence. (For those who are interested, see the series of posts I did last year on the Sorcerer State).

This in turn takes a high level of language awareness – to be able to read critically, to think logically, to cross-reference news sources, including where you see cookie-cutter replication of stories even down to using the same phrases. This also necessitates taking the time to find reliable news sources. In my experience this is a long and gradual process – for me I would say that waking up to the media started around 2016 and has been growing exponentially since then.

This awareness also takes a memory of past predictions. As far as I know none of the astrologers I referenced above took the time to post on how their predictions were wrong, and why. If you don’t take the time to do that kind of review and revaluation it is all too easy to go on making the same sorts of predictions without being aware of them.

In our period of rapid change and ubiquitous media influence I think the single greatest need is for more awareness of how much the legacy media does to warp and pollute our information environment. Bringing that to awareness was part of the motivation for my writing the multi part series on media and the Sorcerer State last year prior to the US election.

As I have mentioned before, I suspect that what I am writing about here will become increasingly obvious over the next few years, so I am doing what I can to raise a call for more media awareness.

If nothing else, I think the increasingly blatant political bias is going far towards discrediting astrology as a worthwhile endeavor, and I would rather not see that happen.
